Tom Brown, Contemporary Music
Tom Brown is Director of Music Ministry at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, where he oversees an eclectic music ministry with traditional choirs for all ages, handbell choirs and Worship Bands (and a monthly Taizé Service). Including a 12 year teaching career (high school, university), he has been a church musician for over 35 years, serving largely in Methodist and Presbyterian churches. He holds the doctorate from the University of Illinois and an undergraduate degree from LSU. He has initiated occa-sional divergent Sundays e.g.,“Jazz Sunday.” His presentations are based on the conviction that a narrow stylistic approach to popular Christian music can address neither the fuller expressions of faith nor the broader attributes of God, both necessary for biblical worship. In part “forced” into the leadership of con-temporary worship and committed to a comprehensive hymnody, he chooses and musically arranges a large body of music to include critically chosen praise music, less mainstream composers (e.g., Michael Card and Fernando Ortega), “contemporized” hymns, songs from Taizé and Iona, and Southern folk hymns in moderate country, Celtic, and bluegrass styles. In his sessions participants will sing and sample the more alternative of these styles with some foundational discussion.

A native of Arkansas, Mr. Wooten holds degrees from William Jewell College, Vienna International Music Conservatory, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His choirs have participated in the International Church Music Festival (Coventry Cathedral 1994 and 2000 and Bern, Switzerland 1997) and the Manhattan Festival of Sacred Music 2001. His wife, Debi, is a music educator in the Plano Independent School District. They have three beautiful, busy children: Brittany, Barrett, and Blair.
